The only required environment variables for running the core GitHub project management features are GITHUB_TOKEN, GITHUB_OWNER, and GITHUB_REPO.

The AI provider API keys (ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY, GOOGLE_API_KEY, PERPLEXITY_API_KEY) are only needed if you want to use the AI-powered features like PRD generation, task parsing, and so on. If no AI keys are provided, the server will still work fine just without the AI capabilities. In that case, you’ll see warnings in the logs letting you know those features are disabled.

That said, since you’re adding AI provider integrations, I think it would be much better if we could support using something like Claude Desktop or any local assistant instead of relying only on API keys. This way, we could pass templates or structured prompts directly to Claude Desktop and let it handle the processing.

For users like me who already pay $20 or 100/month for Claude, using the API means additional usage-based charges on top of the subscription. So if I want to use MCP for PRD generation or task parsing via API, it will cost me even more. Allowing a local integration would be way more cost-effective and user-friendly.

I have tested the current system with RooCode and other vscode plugins for mcp . Let me check with Claude Desktop .

A cool project, I tried but it wasn't working. I just found a simpler implementation of MCP Server that just works! from Claude, Cursor or Windsurf.
