Can't turn the bubbles off!

The bubbles feature is fun, but it's entirely possible not everybody wants to see it all the time.

The site should have a toggle feature that is clear and easy to understand. I'm thinking a beer-tap of some kind to extend the beer metaphor, and the "turn on/turn off" idiom should be clear enough. Either way, I'll probably need designer help to make it look normal.

The toggled setting should also persist across pages in the site. I think a small cookie would work for a session and for as long as the cookie lives on a visitor's computer.

I checked in the beginning to a fix for this. It's a checkbox that triggers some cookie management for persistence. It works across pages, it just looks ugly. It might be cool to redo this as a link with an image or something cool looking.

I think a better way would be to have it as an easter egg. At least for me, I'd rather not have to toggle something off the first time I visit (and whenever my cookie potentially expires). I'll work this into a konami code easter egg. Type in konami code and bam bubbles floating around.

I think this is a good idea. I was starting to feel like it was too much work for a visitor anyway, as they're probably more interested in learning than they are at figuring out why their screen is fizzing up. It's like a less annoying version of MySpace auto-play songs.

I think if you're going to change carbonate.js, we should do that as a branch of the project. It seems like other people are forking it and I don't want to change the intent on them.

Once the easter egg is activated, do you think the user expects that to carry across pages?

Yeah, I've forked carbonate and I'm going to work on it so that on it's own you can do something like:

var carbonate = new carbonate();
carbonate.start();

and that will start the bubbles.

As far as the easter egg persisting across pages, I think it shouldn't. The easter egg will be "discoverable" on all pages, but it will not be persisted across pages (ie user enables easter egg on page 1, user navigates to page 2, page 2 will not have the easter egg visible until they activate it again)

Hey, I just checked in some code to master that brought your 'startable' branch of carbonate.js into the master branch of this project. It's startable by the Konami code. I borrowed the setup from the example on your personal site.

What do you think?

Looks pretty good. It was missing the start (enter) at the end so I added that in :)

So you can do Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Enter and it will turn the bubbles on.
