I have completed every task except for section 6: debugging. This would require a non-OSX machine with administrative access. As I am in California until Friday, I will not be able to access such a machine.
As I mentioned in the Readme, I seemed to have to downgrade my Apple clang version to build the code with CUDA 8. After downloading and switching to the version included in "Command LIne Tools for XCode 7.3," I was able to build the code base.
