I wonder why chapter transitions need to be marked? It could also be a continuous decent.

Alternatively, I could imagine that the chapter transitions mark a real change in the logic of how the fragments are structured.

They needn't be specifically marked, but they represent a contextual bridge between ideas. So the transitions have editorial/writing significance but not necessarily any relevance for the reader. They also function as waypoints for those who are reading a section of the text rather than the whole sequence. A track rather than the album, if you will.
