Open OnDemand

Right now jupyterhub is installed. Having open on demand would open up all their tools, such as visual studio code and also Jupyter.

Absolutely. A team at University of British Columbia has recently offered to develop the Puppet configuration code to enable OpenOnDemand support in Magic Castle. We are expecting work to start in the coming month and feature to be merged by Q3 2025.

Development and specific issue about will happen in the puppet-magic_castle repo. We will keep you posted.

As a note @robkooper, I know it may be out of scope, but if you use the computecanada/alliance software environment, you can use the jupyterhub_node environment which we host on CVMFS, and which comes with pretty much the same tools as OOD. Tools available are described here:

All you need for that is to use (in the newest version of MC, the name of the parameters was changed a bit)

jupyterhub::node::install_method: 'none'
jupyterhub::node::install::prefix: /cvmfs/soft.computecanada.ca/easybuild/software/2023/x86-64-v3/Core/jupyterhub_node/6.8.2

and to load the StdEnv/2023 and jupyterlab-apps/1.0 modules. You won't have the commercial tools, but you can get all of the open source ones directly.
