TL;DR: I'm very time-crunched for the next 24-48 hours, so I'm firing this off as as an incomplete PR due to the Rect's importance.
This may be very broken, so it can be read as a statement of intent. Pick the good parts from it and maybe paste in with a co-author, sorry for the mono-commit.
