Action Performed:

Precondition:

• Log in with Expensifail account.
• Time tracking feature is enabled on OD.

1. Go to staging.new.expensify.com
2. Go to workspace chat.
3. Click + > Create expense > Time.
4. Create two time expenses.
5. Open the expense report.
6. Open any time expense.
7. Click More > Merge.
8. Close the RHP.
9. Click More > Split.

Expected Result:

In Step 7 and 9, time expense in Merge expenses list and Split page will show "Time" label.

Actual Result:

In Step 7 and 9, time expense in Merge expenses list and Split page shows "Cash" instead of "Time" label.

Time expenses show "Cash" instead of "Time" in the Split page header.

What is the root cause of that problem?

In src/pages/iou/SplitExpensePage.tsx, the header text logic only checks for card vs cash:

Time expenses aren't considered, so they default to "Cash".

The correct pattern already exists in src/libs/TransactionPreviewUtils.ts which properly checks isTimeRequest(transaction) and uses 'iou.time'.

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

In src/pages/iou/SplitExpensePage.tsx:

1. Add isTimeRequest to imports:

The Merge page uses TransactionItemRow -> TypeCell -> getTransactionType() which already handles time correctly. If Merge is also broken, it's likely a data issue where comment.type isn't populated in eligibleTransactions.

Time-tracking expenses are incorrectly labeled as “Cash” (instead of “Time”) in:

• The Merge expenses selection list
• The Split page

What is the root cause of that problem?

There are two contributing causes:

• Split page UI logic omission: SplitExpensePage chooses the label using only “card vs cash”, so time (and other special expense types) incorrectly fall back to Cash.
• Merge list depends on transaction-type detection: Merge list uses getTransactionType(); when time transactions arrive in a partial/snapshot shape missing comment.type, the detection can fail and falls back to Cash.

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

Update SplitExpensePage to use the same transaction-type labeling rules used elsewhere (distance/per diem/time/scanning override cash/card).
Harden isTimeRequest() / getTransactionType() to recognize time expenses even when comment.type is missing (e.g. detect via transactionType === time and/or presence of comment.units).
