About Upgrade from Python 2 to 3

Python Team is going to sunset the python 2 from 1st Jan. And the gcloud also will not support python2 from august 2020.
I there any update on webapp2 with python 3 ??
If not then what should I do??

I relied on webapp2 and simpleauth but they are deprecated and must be retired if I understand correctly. Therefore I created a completely new app with Firestore in Datastore mode, could run the User model from webapp2 there in the python3 runtime and migrate all my user entities to the new app via buckets. What did not work was the Uniqueness model but I check for uniqueness in my own code instead.

It is easy to migrate but it takes time. It might not be required to create an entirely new app, you could even run several runtimes in the same app but it is probably good to create a new app if the app is old (my app was created in April 2008 and I plan to retire it completely).

How much work it is will depend on how much you depend on APIs and frameworks which will be retired (webapp2, simpleauth, search & memcached appengine APIs...). I am also switching to authentication with Firebase because simpleauth is no longer maintained.

i've been using v3.0.0b1 with Python 3, and it works great! it's been a while, too. @theacodes, mind bumping it up to a real release and pushing it to pypi?

I've had similar success to snarfed, and only come across one issue (#146 ). I don't think anything stops you from continuing to use webapp2, it just isn't going to have any new features moving forward.

How has this been working for you on Python 3, still going strong?

We need to migrate to Python 3 too and wondering whether you're still using this beta candidate or perhaps have found a better way.

I migrated to Flask a couple years ago. This project hasn't been touched in 6 years, I expect it's dead.

@daskalou We still have some projects using it, but we have had to make our own forks to be able to apply some patches.

However, I somewhat regret not taking the opportunity to migrate to Flask (or some other alternative). Longer term I think that will deliver much more value.

Migration went ok! Definitely took work, but it has felt worth it, the Flask ecosystem is great.

Looking at the code, the main issue we hit was around writing binary data into the response stream.
