Review and fix current failing tests (EC2 spin up failing)

As agreed at standup today (18 Oct), we need to review what is currently failing as tests and fix them so we can get passing PRs.

2023/10/26: Action decided to disable @poikilotherm 's tests and ask him to create a new issue to reenable them once they are fixed.
