Package Request: Tuxguitar

Development versions added support for *.gpx format
Better integration with jack and fluidsynth
Some improvements in the interface (added mute and solo buttons)
Should be easy to compile (run a script)

Nice idea! But IMHO it should be a separate package (tuxguitar-svn or something), because it is still unstable.

That's true, I think I had crashes from time to time when invoking some menus with keyboard, and it may also be a good idea to put some of the plugins in separate packages

I would really like this because I want to use it at all, and the old version doesn't run for me for some reason.

That's true, the previous release for Tuxguitar was something 5 years ago, so no wonder it may not work on modern distros. I think I also had some problems with this release, so I started searching how to fix it and found the compilation instructions.
Actually, they're quite straightforward and you can try to build Tuxguitar yourself:

Please please… this is one of the few that has particularly screwy stuff where I don't know how to install it myself at all, even with some work. I don't quite get it. I really want this and want it available for others too… The update seems superb. Oxygen style support, JACK improvements, etc.

The compilation process is not well documented for tuxguitar, but I managed to compile it from source around a year ago, just let me know if I could be of any help!

Good news, I was able to build tuxguitar.
Did it in a different way, by using gcj and the upstream provided makefile.
(the debian package uses ant to create java *.jar files, gcj creates native binaries)

Just need to do some small testing, I'll push the update soon.

the packaging and install obviously worked, but I can't actually use it.

I see no JACK midi showing up for it. I did check JACK MIDI in the plugins. When I go to the settings view, I can see the general and styles panes, but when I click on Sound to check those settings, this crash happens:

The same sort of error happens in various other cases trying to use the program.

(On a side-note, I had similar issues in the past, although at some point historically, a long while back, I was using Tux Guitar successfully in KXStudio, I think.)

UPDATE: I got it to work better…

I changed one setting I had access to, closed it, got this error in a pop-up window (not just terminal):

org.herac.tuxguitar.action.TGActionException

and this also:

java.lang.NullPointerException

And then I got it to play and work! But then something crashed again later anyway

It seems maybe there's a glitch related to saving settings, and accessing settings, and maybe this has something to do with the packaging or the location of settings or something?? Just speculating…

UPDATE: these warnings still show even though a different gtk2 theme fixes the crash, so these warnings are unrelated.
