Sphinx warnings

Currently if I build the docs I get

build succeeded, 2756 warnings.

which makes it very difficult to act on any one of them, including legitimate ones such as bad links. It would be good to figure out how to suppress the irrelevant ones and fix some of the relevant ones.

What docs are you building? If I just do make html inside the sphinx/ directory I get fewer warnings:

build succeeded, 227 warnings.

Not that those warnings shouldn't be addressed, but I just want to make sure we're looking at the same thing.

No idea. I guess some steps are random or more likely cached. If I run it a few times it decreases every time, up to

build succeeded, 36 warnings.

(some of which are still silly, such as complains about missing modules, when the modules are defined on a different branch).

Yes if I do it a second time without make clean in between I also get something like that. I think in those cases it only rebuilds the automated code documentation and not the manually written docs. But if I do make html after make clean, the number of warnings remain constant (227).

Anyway, since I got a different number of warnings I though we were maybe doing different things, but I guess that's not the case.
