Timeout failures on Mac

It would be good if someone with a Mac could investigate what is taking so long and if it is a genuine problem or Mac VMs being slow.

Things to try would be running the tests locally, modifying the slow test and increasing the timeout.

is there a specific branch or is this on any branch.. e.g master?

on master the tests don't seem slow on my laptop

Could we just try increase the timeout and see if that fixes it?

is this a problem on our end? I'm running conda build and it seems like the bottleneck is possibly downloading the resources

ok so I ran again locally and now am able to reproduce the hang..

I put a bunch of print statements and it seems that test_dataspecschi2 is getting stuck between the action finishing, and the matplotlib test passing/failing.. so probably it's something regarding pytest-mpl?
