Description
Bogenschutz et al 2025 report some benchmarks for the "GigaLES" setup described by Khairoutdinov et al. 2009. This setup has a resolution of 2048 x 2048 x 256 and simulates deep convection in the tropical Atlantic (as observed by the GATE field campaign).
Side note that the Global Atmospheric Research Program Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) — was nothing short of epic: the largest atmospheric field campaign ever conducted. In the summer of 1974, an international armada of 39 ships and 13 aircraft from 72 countries descended on the tropical Atlantic, deploying 5,000 scientists, technicians, and support staff to study tropical convection and its role in global weather and climate (Zipser et al 2024).
here's a snapshot from Bogenschutz et al 2025 (fig 2):
They report 3.6 SDPD on 96 nodes (384 GPU) and 12.6 SDPD on 512 nodes (2048 GPU)
Some preliminary tests suggest that Breeze can fit this resolution (or nearly so) on a single H200 with 144 GB at single precision. It'd be fun to set up the entirety of this case (which requires radiation as well). SCREAM is using the P3 scheme, which we don't have implemented yet. Probably with P3 scheme we would need to branch out to 2 GPUs at least.
