The steps you are taking are basically correct. Some distributions store the current configuration file in /boot, but that does not seem to be the case for you. Do you have the current configuration for your kernel available to you? You should be able make minor modifications to the process described in the wiki to amend your configuration with the additional config options required for the DFL driver.
