Because no way to catch sep bare C exception, we have to do generic exception catching.
mostly to bump tests.
It's already optimized enough.
Creating undefined hard to track behavior.

Add N tries while increasing theshold
Because no way to catch sep bare C exception, we have to do generic exception catching.
alternative would be monkeypatching sep to throw a proper exception but the end result is really not that different.
