Not sure if its possible but instead of only using the Route an additional option for the checking the systems surrounding your current system or maybe around your route for alternate planets to visit would be useful for exploring

The game doesn't provide any information, of course, but EDSM does have a cube check. Of course, this only gives information for systems that other commanders have visited and shared data for. I could call that API if you like. I'll have to think about how to present the data, though.
