Sort Directory limits

The Sort Directory DA has a limit on the number of entries it can sort.

Anecdotally, my HD image ended up with some form of directory corruption; this may be coincidence.

It sorts up to 7 blocks worth of entries.

... which is ~90 entries.

The DeskTop overlay area $5000-$7800 is 10k or room for 20 blocks, or ~260 entries.

Note that since DeskTop can't show a window for a directory with over ~127 files, switching to use the overlay area wouldn't actually gain that much.
