π¨π»βπ» Day Job: Vice President, Engineering at Microsoft π₯π©π¦π¨
π Location: Living near Seattle, WA π² Β· Originally from the UK π¬π§
I've spent over two decades building the systems that sit underneath everything else β from early UK hosting and telecom, through HP, Dyn, DigitalOcean, and Oracle as cloud took over, with a stint at GitHub, the home of open source, to hyperscale compute and security at AWS and Microsoft.
Now I'm focused on what AI demands from all of it next.
Open source has been a thread from the start β IRC ops on Freenode back in the OPN days, hacking on Gentoo as a student, the first Google Summer of Code, OpenStack in its early years, then building at GitHub, HP, and others.
Today I lead Azure Capacity and Foundational Observability β forecasting and delivering compute, GPU, and storage across 50+ regions and hundreds of datacenters, bringing gigawatts of new capacity online every year. Deploying the very latest hardware: Intel Xeon 6, AMD Turin, NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 racks, and petabit-scale networks. Before that, I ran Entra Core Services in Microsoft Security β the identity systems processing trillions of requests weekly β defending against increasingly sophisticated and persistent nation-state threat actors.
I still get my hands dirty β at work and at home, where a 1,000+ device Home Assistant setup keeps me busy.
Outside of work: fitness, cycling, photography, reading, gaming, travel, great food, and yelling at the TV during Kraken games. π
