@kszucs I think @jorisvandenbossche is wanting to get this into 7.0 if we can. This is a temporary change and I plan on getting ARROW-14798 and ARROW-15363 in 8.0.

Though this is a valuable feature, the issue is classified as a minor improvement.

Postponing to 8.0 means that shouldn't block the 7.0 release on this issue, but going to include if the patch gets merged before the release procedure begins.
