Cherry-pick apache#37295. The range field is accidentally compared to DUMMY_ITEM. It was introduced by apache#35461.

The range field is accidentally compared to DUMMY_ITEM.
It was introduced by #35287, and this PR should be merged once #35287 is cherry-picked to 2.0.
