Async all the things!

Next batch of work is a MAJOR refactoring of the whole library to make it async and suitable for high-performance applications.

This library is opinionated, and so will this refactor. There will be NO sync APIs where async makes sense, and the async APIs will NOT be postfixed "Async", because there's a freaking keyword for that already.
