The 'wasi-experimental' workload is not supported in .NET 9.

I've just come back to my demo after a week, and all of a sudden nothing builds. I get the following error:

C:\Program Files\dotnet\sdk-manifests\9.0.100\microsoft.net.workload.mono.toolchain.current\9.0.3\WorkloadManifest.Wasi.targets(14,5): error : The 'wasi-experimental' workload is not supported in .NET 9.

Any idea what's going on? I can't see any info about this change from searching.

Looks like upstream made the wasi-experimental workload disabled in dotnet/runtime#108877. Componentize-dotnet uses the native-aot-llvm compiler which doesn't need the wasi workload installed. Maybe this landed in 9.0.3?

to verify it is installed run

 dotnet workload list

and then

dotnet workload uninstall wasi-experimental

Thanks. Even uninstalling it I still get the same error.

It seems to object to <RuntimeIdentifier>wasi-wasm</RuntimeIdentifier> which still seems like a fundamental part of the template you supply.

The sample

dotnet new componentize.wasi.cli -o MyApp

Fails in the same way.

I was able to reproduce this by updating to the latest .net version:

upgrading to dotnet 10 preview does resolve this issue. We really should be on this release anyways since all the Native-aot compiled tooling is built of 10 sdk

This project is around enabling c# components in wasm/wasi, it uses the https://github.com/dotnet/runtimelab/tree/feature/NativeAOT-LLVM experimental compiler. It does do alot of simliar things but also adds ability to use wit-bindgen and compose components. It is not supported by the .NET team.

For the future of wasi-experimental I would suggest opening an issue on https://github.com/dotnet/runtime to get some guidance on the .NET team's plans. It would also help to express interest .NET support for wasi and share the use cases for enable it.
