API Proposal: Sponsored Data API
Problem description
Currently, there is no standardized API in CAMARA's portfolio that allows enterprises or institutions to sponsor mobile data usage for end users in a simple, destination-agnostic way. This limits commercial and social opportunities where third parties would like to cover the cost of general-purpose data sessions (e.g., marketing campaigns, onboarding support, public connectivity programs).
Expected action
Create and include a new API family under the CAMARA project, named Sponsored Data, that enables the initiation, monitoring, and termination of sponsored data sessions (ANY-destination). The API will provide methods for third parties to manage sponsorships via secure interfaces with the mobile operator, leveraging existing capabilities such as OCS-based Free Units.
