Implements simplified BlockExecutor component.

  • Takes post_state_hash from chainspec handler
  • Updates post_state_hash after each commit for each execution result
  • Can execute as much deploys as passed through FinalizedBlock and commit them
  • There are some test assumptions regarding error handling still (i.e. assumes post state hash exists otherwise panics)
  • Client is updated to accept --session-args session_args.json and --payment-args payment_args.json and makes deploy hashes random. Right now it's simplified to allow only CLValues serialized into base16 (see below)
  • Also node is actually doing AccountHash from PublicKey as documented both in chainspec and during execution.
  • Signatures/authorized keys right now just assumed to be same as the deploying account

Testing

I was able to test the execution end to end with a new totally random secret key:

dd if=/dev/urandom of=secret_key.raw bs=1 count=32
# PUBLIC_KEY=$(here obtain public key in base16 using a print statement inside a client)
echo "$PUBLIC_KEY,ed25519,1000000000000000,0" >> resources/production/accounts.csv

Run node:

RUST_LOG=trace cargo run -- validator --config=$(pwd)/mynode.toml

Put deploy:

cargo run --bin=casperlabs-client -- put-deploy http://localhost:7777 \
  --payment-code target/wasm32-unknown-unknown/release/standard_payment.wasm \
  --payment-args payment_args.json \
  --session-code target/wasm32-unknown-unknown/release/revert.wasm \
  --session-args session_args.json \
  --secret-key secret_key.raw

Where args are:

payment_args.json

[
  {
    "name": "amount",
    "value": {
      "raw_bytes": "050000000400e1f50508"
    }
  }
]

session_args.json

[]

This is super simplified for now but client is able to load both payment
and session arguments from a json file of format:

```
[{"name": "argument name", "value": {"raw_bytes": "00..."}}]
```

Right now it only supports `raw_bytes` which represents ABI serialized
`CLValue` instances.

What does the long do? Also, it looks like you're adding it to session_code rather than payment_args. Is that intentional?

Yes that's intentional. payment_code, payment_args, session_code, session_args are all meant to be valid paths (parse(from_os_str)) and will be parsed from command line as --payment-code <filename> (long)

Can you update the comment – it passes it to the BlockExecutor, not Contract Runtime anymore.

if it needs only the post-state hash then it shouldn't have to accept the whole ChainSpecHandler.

I wanted to hide that fact so only block executor would know what he needs from chainspec to function properly but fair enough I changed it

In the event sourcing pattern, events are in the past tense b/c they represent something that has already happened. Here, you're mixing requests and events.

Why do both execution and commit events have to have the Vec<ExecutionResult>?

Why do we call the same method, process_execution_results both in DeploysExecutionResult and CommitExecutionEffects?

To avoid duplication as process_execution_results checks if there's more results, and if there's more then it will schedule another event to commit them, otherwise it will just respond to the main_responder.

Personally, in cases like this one, I prefer to duplicate rather than confusion. But maybe it's just me that is confused.

So this will be called for both DeploysExecutionResult and CommitExecutionEffects? I am a bit lost.

CommitExecutionEffects will be called repeatedly with ExecutionResults until it's empty and then it will respond. I changed naming slightly to follow other component's naming for similar events.

Instead of using `into_iter()`, getting the first element and collecting
the tail again this commit changes the result container
`Vec<ExecutionResult>` into `ExecutionResults` which is an alias for
`VecDeque<ExecutionResult>`.

This way popping from the front is more efficient and avoid reallocations.
- Slightly changed naming of events to follow naming established in
other components doing same requests.
- Adjust comments and ticket missing pieces.

98: Better proposal timeout adaptation. r=afck a=afck

Instead of just doubling it every round and resetting it whenever a block gets finalized, adapt the proposal timeout more slowly, and in a way that makes it settle roughly at a configurable multiple of a certain percentile of measured delays.

Closes https://github.com/casper-network/Governance/issues/334.

Here's the original proposal, but note that I've made slightly different choices for how to represent the parameters:

## Motivation

In Zug, at the start of every round, all validators set a timer: If no proposal gets accepted before it fires, they vote to allow skipping the round. The timeout should not be too long: A single faulty leader will stall the network until the timer fires. But if it is too short, some correct leaders' blocks will get orphaned because they don't manage to get them accepted in time.

We do want the timeout to dynamically adapt, but it needs to be Byzantine fault tolerant: With a configured fault tolerance threshold _f_, we have to limit the extent to which that percentage of nodes can influence it. That is why a median or percentile is more useful than a mean, because the latter reacts strongly to single outliers. The timeout should roughly be based on some _X_-th percentile of measured proposal delays, between _f_ and _100% - f_ of the validators. (_X = 50%_ would be the median.)

Since the actual delay to proposal acceptance already depends on the fastest quorum anyway, i.e. the fastest _(100% + f) / 2_ of validators, it makes sense to use that as the value _X_.

Instead of keeping track of a rolling window of measurements and computing a percentile, we propose something simpler with similar properties:

## Proposal

There is a configurable initial proposal timeout value, but every time a new round begins it gets updated. A grace period factor _G_ (default 3) and an inertia _R_ (default 10) are also configurable.

* We _increase_ the timeout by multiplying it with a factor _2<sup>1 / (R (1 - f))</sup>_ whenever
    * we vote `false` (i.e. our timer fired without an accepted proposal), _or_
    * we vote `true` (i.e. we accept a proposal in time) after a time _t_ where _G t_ is greater than our current proposal timeout.
* Whenever we vote `true` (i.e. we accept a proposal in time) after a time _t_ where _G t_ is less or equal to our current proposal timeout, we _decrease_ it, dividing it by _21 / (R (1 + f))_.
* _But_: When increasing whe never go higher than _G t_, and when decreasing whe never go lower than _G t_.

In other words whenever we increase the timeout, we add _1 / (R (1 - f))_ to its binary logarithm, and when we decrease it we subtract _1 / (R (1 + f))_. So:

* If our timeout is way too low and all proposals are too slow, the timeout will double after _~ R (1 - f)_ blocks.
* If our timeout is way too high and all proposals get accepted quickly, it will halve after _~ R (1 + f)_ blocks.
* If our timeout is roughly _G_ times as long as it takes the slowest validator among the fastest quorum to get a proposal accepted, then a fraction of _(1 - f) / 2_ rounds will cause an increase and _(1 + f) / 2_ a decrease, so the increases and decreases will cancel out over time.

So the timeout will settle at a value where, if you want to get your proposal accepted, you shouldn't be slower by a factor of _≥ G_ compared to the slowest validator among the fastest _(100% + f) / 2_.

(Note that if we move to round robin, where everyone gets to be leader equally often, we need to multiply both exponents with _w / a_, where _w_ is the proposer's weight, and _a_ is the average weight.)
