Overview
I'm working on a new contact form that has some optional fields, which means we should probably describe the required fields. I've been liking the way the word "required" looks in our badge component within a label, but it feels like it could use an iconographic asterisk.
I started with one that just combined the

plusandxicons, but it looked way too thick:So I went to more of a star-pointed one that's closer to the Source Sans asterisk, but it feels sort of… indistinct? The open spaces almost catch my eye a bit too much, I'm not sure.

So I returned to the previous version, but I tapered the lines just a bit. But now it felt stylistically out of place... almost like it's from a high-contrast typeface or something.

So I tried the same thing but with about half as much tapering, and this is the version I felt happy with. I don't think you'd ever notice the tapering, it just keeps the emphasis on the points instead of the middle.
