Customize notifications for failed logins

Is there a way to customize notifications that display when a login fails?

Currently our instance of Brute Force Stop displays two notifications before blocking the IP address, then a much longer one when the IP address is blocked, but none of those notifications actually include the message we have specified in the Plugin settings (under Advanced > Blocked Message). That Blocked Message notification only appears after the IP address has been blocked, if the user tries to visit the website again (not log in, just visit).

We would like to be able to customize all the notification messages, as well as format them.

Do you mean the standard "Username or password wrong or account does not exist" ? This one does not come out of bfstop but from the default Joomla! login, you'd have to investigate in Joomla core how to adapt this message.

bfstop does have two messages that it might show before the actual blocking; a message about the number of remaining attempts and a message about better using the password reset functionality before being blocked. Both can be adapted through language files; see the respective language file, e.g. en-GB.plg_system_bfstop.ini for english; the messages have the language keys PLG_SYSTEM_BFSTOP_X_ATTEMPTS_LEFT and PLG_SYSTEM_BFSTOP_PASSWORD_RESET_RECOMMENDED, respectively.

I think you can override those strings by putting a new file en-GB/en-GB.plg_system_bfstop.ini with just those strings and your messages (replace en-GB by the respective language you are actually using, e.g. de-DE for german) in the top-level language folder, but I haven't tested this. I would recommend against directly changing the files in the plugins folder - those will be overwritten on plugin updates.

Maybe this might be improved by using the mail template system in place since Joomla 4, but I'd have to research how this can be used from this extension easily...
