I've copied the messages up to 5.6 from the Google group, and added a first version of release notes for 5.7. These will still need updating as they surely aren't complete.
Moving forward, I would hope that any pull request implementing user-visible changes will include a note in the CHANGELOG file so that this is kept up to date. This will make release announcements much easier to draft.
