Estimated code review effort

🎯 3 (Moderate) | ⏱️ ~20 minutes

  • Areas to focus on:
    • Confirm Get-FileVersion is available/imported in module runtime and its contract (parameter types, return shape) matches previous expectations.
    • Verify updated unit tests reflect the actual return type and behavior of Get-FileVersion.
    • Search for any remaining references to Get-FileVersionInformation elsewhere in the repository.

Pre-merge checks

✅ Passed checks (5 passed)
Check name Status Explanation
Title check ✅ Passed The title clearly summarizes the main change: refactoring Assert-SetupActionProperties to use Get-FileVersion from DscResource.Common.
Description check ✅ Passed The description is well-related to the changeset, explaining the refactor, linking to issue #2373, and documenting completed tasks.
Linked Issues check ✅ Passed All primary coding objectives from issue #2373 are met: usages of Get-FileVersionInformation replaced with Get-FileVersion, private function file removed, tests and documentation updated.
Out of Scope Changes check ✅ Passed All changes are directly aligned with the refactoring objectives; no unrelated modifications were introduced outside the scope of issue #2373.
Docstring Coverage ✅ Passed No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check.

1984-2007: Add required comment-based help sections and [OutputType] attribute.

The function is missing required documentation sections per the coding guidelines:

  • .DESCRIPTION section (40+ characters required)
  • .INPUTS section
  • .OUTPUTS section
  • .EXAMPLES section

Additionally, add the [OutputType([System.String])] attribute before the parameter block, since the function returns a string (the major version number).

🔎 Proposed fix for missing help and output type declaration

This function should be removed when it is not longer used, and instead

This is a duplicate of the mock at Line 391. The same verification applies: ensure the mocked return structure matches the actual output from Get-FileVersion in the DscResource.Common module.

Learning: In the DscResource.Test repository, DSC resource attributes are consistently written as `[DscResource(...)]` rather than using variations like `[DscResourceAttribute()]` or fully qualified names like `[Microsoft.PowerShell.DesiredStateConfiguration.DscResource()]`. The Test-FileContainsClassResource function should focus on detecting the standard `[DscResource(...)]` pattern that is actually used in the codebase.

Learning: In UpdateServicesDsc (and similar DSC modules), the module-level localization file (source/en-US/<ModuleName>.strings.psd1) can be empty when DSC resources have their own localization files in source/DSCResources/<ResourceName>/en-US/DSC_<ResourceName>.strings.psd1. Automated tests verify localization completeness for resources. Don't flag empty module-level localization files as issues when resources have separate localization.

Learning: For MOF-based DSC resources in DSC Community repositories (files matching `source/DSCResources/MSFT_*/MSFT_*.psm1`), the comment-based help for `Get-TargetResource`, `Set-TargetResource`, and `Test-TargetResource` functions should NOT include `.OUTPUTS` sections, even though the general PowerShell guidelines require them. 44-47: Changelog entries accurately capture the refactor and function removal

The new Changed and Removed bullets for Assert-SetupActionProperties and Get-FileVersionInformation are concise, correctly scoped as internal changes, and reference [issue #2373] with the expected link format. Formatting is consistent with the rest of the Unreleased section.

Also applies to: 124-126

source/Private/Assert-SetupActionProperties.ps1 (1)

45-53: Verify Get-FileVersion API compatibility with current usage

The refactored code pipes MediaPath\setup.exe to Get-FileVersion and accesses the .ProductVersion property. This change is sound if Get-FileVersion:

  • accepts a file path via pipeline input
  • returns an object with a ProductVersion property

Unable to confirm these assumptions from public documentation. Please verify against the current DscResource.Common module that the API supports this usage pattern before merging.

tests/Unit/Private/Assert-SetupActionProperties.Tests.ps1 (1)

391-395: The mock correctly returns a hashtable with the ProductVersion property, matching the code's usage of Get-FileVersion in Assert-SetupActionProperties. This change from the deprecated Get-FileVersionInformation to Get-FileVersion from DscResource.Common is properly reflected in the test mocks.
