A build server would be cool, but we need tests first. How would you set it up? We certainly have the resources to host such a server, it's just a matter of preference concerning CI software. We made this organization today and transferred ownership. It will eventually hold the submodules as well.

No need to host your own CI box. If you do that you have to worry about all the hardware and software yourself. You can use the services of https://travis-ci.org/. You guys should all have free private builds since you're students, but if not, I can provide you with one. They also offer unlimited free builds for open source projects; I'm sure this would qualify.

Tests would be nice, but are not necessary. Since this is all Python it seems, it looks like you don't really need compilation. In that case, all Travis would do is ensure your code can run on Python 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.0, etc. You can also have it package up any modules, execute a setup.py, etc.

If you are absolutely dead set on using your own CI box, I would recommend using Jenkins. I can help you guys with that if you want to go that route, although I'd recommend against it.
