I found the exceptions to make debugging a bit harder when the endpoint failed, this also simplifies the main loop of the zmq server

A bunch of misc fixes for vanilla function call latency, as we discussed on Slack, backported from my fork.
I tried to separate each fix into a separate commit, for easier reviewing and removal/modification if you don't want any of them.
