[Internal bug] Invalid upstream

I'm regularly getting errors like [Internal bug] Invalid upstream: refs/heads/XXX - != refs/heads/XXX refs/remotes/origin/XXX out of the blue (not related to an operation on the XXX branch`. I found #2579 which looked similar, but the message is slightly different, and updating to 2.65.1 didn't help.

Please open .git/config and show the [branch "XXX"] section (you can redact the names).

In particular, the XXX branch doesn't match any pattern in the [remote "origin"] section.
