Geteduroam not working on Android 10

On an Android 10 device:

1. removing all eduroam networks and deinstalling Geteduroam and Eduroam Cat
2. Installing Geteduroam from Google Play
3. Searching Institution (DKFZ) and enter user information, push Install
4. Receiving silent message and push "yes"
5. Connect with WLAN eduroam => enter user and password, a certificate must be selected, we choose the one with EDUROAM in the name.

Now trying to connect to WLAN eduroam does not succeed without any information or error. It just doesn't connect successfully.

What can we try next? Are there any diagnostics possible to report?

While this isn't the right repository anymore to report issues with Android (it's for our former App); I think you may hit an issue in Android 10 where the network only connects when there is no manual connection available. Can you check if all manual networks are removed (you really shouldn't click on the SSID, that creates a manual configuration and disables the way we need to connect in Android 10) and switch WiFi Off and On, to see if it really doesn't connect? There also should not be other manually configured networks available, they take precedence.

Ok, I should have answered there in that case, but that was only yesterday and this one got my attention earlier.

I don't know what vendor/OEM this is; it may be that the vendor removed all APIs to do WiFi configuration properly? If neither CAT nor any version of geteduroam was able to configure it.

Can you share the vendor, so we can see if we have experience?

We have two mobile phones with Android 10 and same issue. The one where we have tried everything in detail is this one:

Samsung is known to work. I'll try to find an Android 10 device to confirm.

At least step 5 in your list is unnecessary, and breaks the config that the App may have done.

At least with geteduroam. With eduroam Cat there is this step. I just reported it for completeness. But of course we would like to use geteduroam as this is the recommended path I believe.

I think the answer from @pauldekkers is the correct one.

On Android 10 the new API ("Suggestions") that we use for configuring Wi-Fi broken in a pretty annoying way:

• Networks configured by the app do not show up in the settings AT ALL
• When another Wi-Fi network is available that the device can connect to, it will completely ignore the network from the app
• When eduroam is nearby and NO OTHER configured Wi-Fi network is available, a notification shows up in the background where the user must accept connecting to the network

There is another API, the so-called Legacy API, which is what the older eduroamCAT app uses.
When we submit to the Play Store, we are not allowed to use this API, as the API is unavailable when we target Android 10+, and we must target a newer version.

The only way to get this to work on Android 10 is to manually compile an APK and target a lower version. Maybe F-Droid allows this?

It works for Android 8 and 9 because the Suggestions API is not available there, so there the app will fall back on the Legacy API. It also works on Android 11 because there the Suggestions API is fixed.

Maybe a custom APK for Android 10 users from the geteduroam homepage is the answer/option. Otherwise, the really old version from APKPure (https://apkpure.net/geteduroam/app.eduroam.geteduroam/download/1.0.16 ) would potentially resolve the problem?
