HUAWEI P20 Pro CLT-L09: Silent notification not shown, and no connection created

Device details:

1. HUAWEI P20 Pro CLT-L09
2. build number: 12.0.0.225(C782E4R1P1patch01)
3. EMUI version 12.0.0

(EMUI 12 is apparently based Android 10.)

With the latest version from the Play Store, downloading the configuration file and clicking on it, the geteduroam app is started. But after entering the credentials, it says it’s done, and the user should look out for a silent notification, but there is no notification, and also no connection set up.

@paulmenzel what I've seen in the past that the silent notification sometimes appears with quite some delay, like 5 or 10 seconds after requesting it from the system. Perhaps try waiting on the 'success screen' of the app for a bit.

If it doesn't appear, did you try to connect to the "eduroam" Wi-FI network anyways? Does it have a saved login information, or does it ask for the credentials?

If none of the above help, you could check with a 3rd party permission manager if the permission is granted or not, e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rikka.appops (this might require root or advanced access via adb)

We tried again, and waited for more than 20 seconds. No notification was shown.

It asked for credentials, and we set it up manually, and where able to connect (without certificate verification, as the Save button was greyed out whenever we tried to activate the verification).

It does write some logs, but the problem here is that we tell the system that it should add a Wi-Fi network, but the system itself doesn't do it. But maybe it does write something to the logs. Can you send a bugreport by attaching it here, or if you want to keep it private, by sending it to daniel@egeniq.com?

What you could also try, is if the older version of our application works for you.

This one is built on a different basis as the current one, so might be worth a try

Thank you for the detailed reply. I try to get the report from the user. Can the report taken any time, or does it need to be after some specific interaction with geteduroam?

Also, the device seems to cost around 110 €. Is it possible for the developers to buy such a phone with the funding from the NREN (GÉANT?)?

The report contains the system logs from the past. So before taking the report, you should try to do execute the whole flow in geteduroam (maybe after a reinstall, so that everything gets logged again), and when finished, go take a bug report.

Well that wouldn't be very sustainable, if we would buy a device for each bug report 😄
We did try on another Android 10 device (not Huawei) and there we confirmed it worked fine with the latest version.

I did some more reading around, and there was a suggestion that you shouldn't be connected to a Wi-Fi network on Android 10 while doing this. Try to clear the networks around you from the saved network list and then going through the flow (via mobile data). Probably won't help, but worth a try as well.

Alternatively, I have created an APK for you which targets Android 9, and uses an older way of setting up the Wifi network.
We cannot use this in the production version, because targeting Android 9 while 16 has just been released is a security risk and it will give you scary popups when trying to run it on a newer device.
I'm curious if maybe this helps.

Android 9 or 10? The package name contains 10, and the device should use Android 10.

It targets Android 9, so that the changes made in Android 10 do not apply yet, that's why it is using a different version of adding the network. So the app is intended for Android 10 devices, and that explains the name 😄

Thank you for your detailed replies and work. I am going to try to test it, but as written, as it’s only one user, and one device, cost and benefit for our institute alone is not so good. And just relaying information is also not a fun job for me. I keep you posted.

Well, it’s always cost benefit. And 110 € compared to the wage of three people would justify this, in my opinion.

I expect that this is the same issue as #105, so if this works the fix there should be the same.
