Collaboration with conda-forge python-spams packages

spams is available with conda install -c conda-forge python-spams (c.f. https://github.com/conda-forge/python-spams-feedstock)

I posted there to keep them inform about our new organisation (c.f. conda-forge/python-spams-feedstock#66) and someone responded that they were looking for new maintainer(s).

We could maybe think about collaborating with them so that python-spams from conda-forge points to here and not to an old release like (http://spams-devel.gforge.inria.fr/hitcounter2.php?file={{ file_num }}/spams-python-v{{ version }}-svn{{ date }}.tar.gz).

Do you know how this is handled? Does it work like in PYPI?

@daducci It is quite different. From what I know, the channel conda-forge automatically updates from recipe in the corresponding github repositories (which does not contain the package source by the way, just the url where to recover it).

I'm not experienced in (ana)conda channel setup. And from what I read, it is not as simple as PyPI, partly explaining why I stick to PyPI.

FYI, here is a tutorial about making a conda package from a Python package. I guess we coulduse that and propose python-spams from conda-forge to restart from scratch.

I have tried to install python-spams using provided conda command. However, on python version 3.9 it throws error which shows it is incompatible with other python packages installed. and the conda forces to down ground python to 3.6. I was wondering if you could please help me out here with this issue and how I can installed alongside with python 3.9.

You could try to do the following:

conda skeleton pypi spams
conda build spams
conda install --use-local spams

It will locally convert the PyPI package to conda format and install it as a conda package.

I followed what you suggested, but I face some error.
for the first command 'conda skeleton pypi spams' there was an error regarding skeleton package. My error was as same as in this link. I could get rid of the error using the solution suggested by lynch730 .
However, in second command 'conda build spams' I faced following errors.

ERROR: Failed building wheel for spams
Failed to build spams
ERROR: Could not build wheels for spams, which is required to install pyproject.toml-based projects

I installed wheel. However, I got this error again.

What OS are you using?

Since we are not maintaining the python-spams conda package (c.f. the this discussion above), I would recommend to report the issue here : https://github.com/conda-forge/python-spams-feedstock
