Announcing the deprecation of TPU v2-8 chips and introduction of TPU v5e-1 chips into free tier

TPU V2-8 Retirement

We are retiring the TPU v2-8 and replacing them with the newer TPU v5e-1. This change will take place in two phases over the coming weeks:

• Phase 1- TPU v5e-1 becomes available alongside TPU v2-8 in free tier. These chips will be available in parallel on free tier for several weeks.
• Phase 2- TPU v2-8 is removed from free tier, and only TPU v5e-1 is available. This will happen sometime in September.

Action needed

For notebooks that are using TPU v2-8 chips, we recommend migrating to v5e-1 as soon as possible. Do this by selecting: runtime connection drop down menu > change runtime type > select TPU v5e-1 > Save.

cant use v5e-1 TPU on free-tier account, same as v2-8.

now that the TPU v2-8 are gone will the v5e-1 get 3 hours and 30 minutes of usage on the free tier like the v2 did or will remain just 1 hours and 30 minutes?

Are there any plans to introduce 8 chip v5e or v6e? The migration impacts projects with any form of model parallelism across the 8 chip topology.
