Setting a page as the index?

Question, I'm modifying my index file but currently I'm doing it in index.ejs. Is there a way to set a page as the index so I'm editing a markdown file rather than the layout file?

eg. Hexo home page has a very different index page.

Maybe you can create a new file and save as source/index.md:

layout: index
---

Certainly you can use another layout rather than index if you want.
