As far as I know, this was not thought through and cleaned up. We first need to decide on how error handling is done, and then stick to whatever we decide on. Here's a draft I wrote a while ago:

This requires careful attention and careful (and time consuming) review of existing code, so won't happen in a couple of days, definitely not before 2.0.0 ...
