TITLE: UofT-DSI | Shell - Assignment 1

What changes are you trying to make? (e.g. Adding or removing code, refactoring existing code, adding reports)

I added shell scripts to process the files based off their names and extensions.

What did you learn from the changes you have made?

I learned how to fork a repo onto my computer and some applications for the Bash we covered in the first week.
I also learned how to make sure I am putting the pull request in the right place!

Was there another approach you were thinking about making? If so, what approach(es) were you thinking of?

I considered removing the files with IPADDR in the name prior to the step that copies each file to the subfolders in processed. While the number of files was small enough that searching is trivial, it seems more efficient to search/delete once and then move the files to the right directory, rather than copying the files and searching both directories. However, as the assignment specified the order we should do steps, I followed that.

Were there any challenges? If so, what issue(s) did you face? How did you overcome it?

  1. Searching for wildcards. My solution worked after some adjusting, but I suspect having both ipaddr and ipaddr* is not the most elegant way to handle searching for a string that may be at the beginning or in the middle of a filename.

How were these changes tested?

I initially tested the scripts on my device with a few sample files. Once the basics were working, I moved on to testing with the entire provided dataset, made additional changes to account for edge cases in file naming and verified all files were handled as expected.
