Observed behavior

Upload files screen: When I click "select files," it opens my file explorer, but nothing happens when I choose a file to upload. It only works when I try again a second time

Expected behavior

Lower latency and a more responsive UI

So far, this is not replicable on hotfixes by team members in the US (although there is some slowness) so it seems possible that this is connected to: geographic performance difference in our infrastructure, Cloudflare prioritization. This needs further exploring to see how this might be a factor here.

User-facing consequences

Poorer performance in geographic areas further from US (so, this is likely better representative of our typical Studio user than those of us doing QA and testing in the US).

I looked into this issue today, actually, the latency that's being observed here is because the backend uploadURL function takes around 1.5 - 2 seconds to return the presigned file upload URL.

So, to solve this I see two possible approaches --

• Add a loading spinner to DeafultFileUpload component until backend has finished processing.

• Once a file is selected, we immediately redirect to EditModal and rest of the uploading process i.e. getting the presigned URL and then uploading file via that URL happens async in EditModal while user can keep editing rest of the fields.

cc @bjester what do you think? I feel the second one is a better UX (but is more involved code wise).

@vkWeb Perhaps we could start the request to get the uploadURL, but not wait for the request promise immediately, rather instead open the file dialog (which I assume blocks), then handle the response after the user selects the file?

@bjester uploadURL requires file details like -- its preset, checksum, etc to calculate the presigned URL. So I think we can only send a request to uploadURL once we have those details which is only after user has selected a file from the file dialog...?
