mintsources displays all Ubuntu repo mirror servers as "Unreachable" since after recent DDoS attacks against Ubuntu #275

Description

Preface:
At the beginning of May 2026 Ubuntu servers worldwide experienced massive DDoS attacks, going on for several days.
Launchpad PPA servers and Ubuntu repo mirror servers were affected as well.

Software Sources reports any Ubuntu repo server as "Unreachable:
After Ubuntu had managed to recover from the DDoS attacks, Linux Mint users started reporting "Ubuntu repo mirror servers were down".
What the affected users really see, however, is this:

  1. Users launch Software Sources and try to set a Ubuntu mirror server.
  2. Software Sources tries to check the speed of the local Ubuntu mirror servers in the user's region
  3. For every single Ubuntu mirror server, Software Sources displays its status as "Unreachable".

Actually the Ubuntu mirror servers are not unreachable at all. Instead it seems as if they have stopped answering to the specific requests, which Software Sources sends to them in order to determine their transfer speed.
(Python script: /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSources/mintSources.py)

This problem is reproducible on LM 21.x and on LM 22.x.

How to reproduce:
See this Linux Mint forum post, please: Re: All Ubuntu updates/mirrors are "unreachable"
