Rename still not case-sensitive

(searched but couldn't even find the other post that I found via the web (rather than local search on here)

I've always had this issue even though the other git convo (closed) says they can not reproduce it:

whenever I try to rename a file just to change the case of a letter I get

the name is already used in this folder. Please use a different name

Someone said they got around it by installing Nautilus - is that the only option?

Steps to reproduce

using Nemo; any file that I try to rename to toggle the case of one or more letters I get rejected.

Expected behavior

being case sensitive changing the case should be as if it is an entirely different name - and allow it, no?

I just tried here and it works fine. I created a new file name "test". Then I right clicked it, chose Rename, and renamed it to "Test". It worked just fine. Using Nemo 6.6.

ok, update - it's drive specific. Even though all the permissions look the same - if I move the file to a different location (drive) I can rename (change case) without changing permissions. The drive is my second 'data' drive, attached /media/dee/data. So far any file I attempt a 'case' change on will not let me.
'data' drive folder icon has a small square in bottom right corner, as do two of it's sub-folders. rename denied is not limited to these two folders.
drive contains a share from my virtual machine.
I think the drive format is getting me, here's the automount from fstab: (I x'd the UUID maybe overly paranoid lol)
UUID="xxxx-xxxx" /media/dee/data exfat uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0022 0 2
I suspect the exfat setting. More testing after I return from work.

sorted, formatted the drive to ext4 and all is well. sorry for the misadventure.
