Changes pulled in from the public Sideboard repo Replaces https://gitlab.services.zz/psd/sideboard/merge_requests/26 with exactly the same changes, but with a ``git rebase`` thrown in to clean up our commit history. See merge request !27

The doc links date back to when this was originally open sourced, before my previous employer took it offline (and implicitly made MAGFest the canonical owner of the project).

My current job uses Sideboard, so we've made some bugfixes and feature additions. Most of it isn't currently relevant to MAGFest, but I'll leave inline comments explaining the different additions, most of which are documented, both in the Sphinx docs and in docstrings.
