Air gap or restricted proxy install

Hi,

Our organisation uses a restricted proxy for our vscode environment in which github.com is not whitelisted. I know other organisations use completely air gapped environments for development.

Is there a way to download a fully packaged vsix that avoids the download after install shown below. The vscode-mssql extension has the same issue, but they provide downloadable releases to work around it.

Hi @ryanbutterfield -- there is currently a workaround, although the steps are somewhat involved. We're looking into ways we can bundle complete platform-specific dependencies into the vsix direclty to avoid this post-install download step.

In the meantime, for folks who are able to access the GitHub releases through other means, the log output from the extension shows both the URL for the dependency download and the path to which it expects it to be extracted to. For reference, those logs can be found by runninng the command `PGSQL: Show PostgreSQL Extension Logs" from the Command Palette.

The dependencies are available here

and the log prints out the directory to which it should be extracted, starting with the text:
[PgToolsService Initialization] Installing PostgreSQL Tools Service to <the full path>

We'll continue to update this issue when we make progress with better offline installation support.

For reference, Microsoft's VS Code SQL plugin (mssql) does exactly as you are mentioning to support offline installs.

Ah I was looking at our code for the mssql extension, thank you that is correct. We are currently pulling the pgsql-tools for air gapped environment. Thank you for the clarification! We'd still be interested in a fully offline install mechanism like the mssql extension provides.

I'm still not able to get this to work in an air-gapped environment.

Even though I've tried copying the files to the folder that the service is trying to install in (c:\Users<username>.vscode\extensions\ms-ossdata.vscode-pgsql-1.10.0\pgsqltoolsservice\v2.1.2\Windows), the extension still attempts to try and download the service installer which of course fails. Here's the log output:

I've tried just dropping the downloaded zip into that folder, and extracting all the files, but it looks like the issue starts with the log entry "Server path not found for runtime ID: Windows_64" which tells it to try to do the download. I noted that on a successful (not disconnected) session, that entry does not exist so it appears that's where it decides the required pgsqltoolsservice needs to be retrieved.

Is there something I need to do to let it know the files are already there or something?

c:\Users\<username>\.vscode\extensions\ms-ossdata.vscode-pgsql-1.10.0\pgsqltoolsservice\v2.1.2\Windows\pgsqltoolsservice\ossdbtoolsservice_main.exe

The _internal directory should be a sibling of the exe above.

I'll note that the next pre-release due out mid-month (v1.11) will include a fully-bundled extension package. If you are able to download the extension from vscode marketplace, it will not require an additional download step for platform-specific files. I'll ping this thread when it's available so folks could validate.

Hi folks -- we've released v1.11.2 to the Marketplace which includes platform specific extension bundles, including all required dependencies. There are no subsequent download steps required. If you can, please switch to the pre-release channel to validate if this solution is working for you. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Just to chip-in/confirm... I also could not get v2.1.2 of the pgsqltoolsservice extension deployed manually without VSCode trying to download the extension when starting, but moving to the pre-release version solved the problem.
