Describe the issue:

When using the reticulate interpreter, the variables pane is not working correctly. We see:

Steps to reproduce the issue:

1. Open a reticulate interpreter
2. Try to use the variables pane

Expected or desired behavior:

Variables pane should work as expected.

Were there any error messages in the UI, Output panel, or Developer Tools console?

This works with Ipykernel 6.29.5 and 6.30.0 and not with 6.30.1.
