question about UTF8

Hi,

at

ld/src/java/com/google/protobuf/JsonFormat.java#1284 there's weird 
multiplicators *2 and *3 showing up, where I'd expect ^2 and ^3. Could anyone 
be so nice and explain to me how this is working?
