Difficult Conversations Scripts

AI-assisted scripts for the business conversations most small business owners dread — written to help you say the hard thing clearly, professionally, and without blowing up the relationship.

This collection covers five situations that come up in almost every service business: raising your rates, addressing scope creep, chasing late payments, responding to negative reviews, and delivering feedback clients didn't ask for but need to hear.

What's in this collection

File What it covers
price-increase.md How to raise your rates with existing clients without losing them
scope-creep.md How to address work that's gone beyond what was agreed
late-payments.md How to follow up on overdue invoices without torching the relationship
negative-reviews.md How to respond to bad reviews publicly and privately
difficult-feedback.md How to deliver honest feedback clients didn't ask for but need to hear

How to use these scripts

Each file includes ready-to-use templates and AI prompts to help you personalize them. The templates are starting points — designed to be adjusted for your voice, your relationship with the client, and the specifics of the situation.

General pattern:

  1. Find the situation that matches yours
  2. Read the framing section before jumping to the scripts — it matters
  3. Use the AI prompt to personalize the template for your situation
  4. Read the result out loud before sending or saying it
  5. Adjust anything that doesn't sound like you

A note on difficult conversations

Most small business owners avoid these conversations too long, then have them badly because the delay added frustration to the situation. The scripts in this collection are designed to be used early — before resentment builds, before the invoice is 90 days overdue, before the scope has ballooned past the point of easy correction.

The goal of every script here is the same: say the necessary thing in a way that respects the relationship and gives the other person room to respond well.

That doesn't always work. But it works far more often than avoidance does.
