Some of these rules are sometimes annoying, but they seem to make sense in this project.

  • Closes #xxxx
  • Tests added
  • User visible changes (including notable bug fixes) are documented in whats-new.rst
  • New functions/methods are listed in api.rst

FURB136 Replace `x if x >= y else y` with `max(x, y)`
FURB167 Use of regular expression alias

The abbreviated flags seem less readable, although experienced
programers might know the abbreviated flags match inline flags.
