shortdescription: Development and validation of kinematic reconstruction methods for top-quark pairs in the dilepton decay channel
description: >
Top-quark pair production is one of the most important processes studied at the LHC.
In the dilepton decay channel there are two undetected neutrinos in the final state.
This makes the reconstruction of the top-quark pair kinematics challenging and requires dedicated reconstruction techniques.
The project focuses on improving kinematic reconstruction approaches for top-quark pairs using open data from the CMS experiment
(note: these are data which are made publicly available by the CMS experiment, and this project itself is not within the CMS Collaboration).
The student will work with analysis frameworks commonly used in high-energy physics and will investigate and improve different strategies
to reconstruct the neutrino kinematics and the properties of the top-quark pair system.
Possible directions for improvement include using additional kinematic constraints and/or implementing machine learning techniques.
The performance will be assessed in terms of reconstruction efficiency and resolution of the reconstructed observables.
The project provides hands-on experience with collider data analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and modern analysis tools used in particle physics.
