Hello,

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your detailed project. This is very close to what I plan to build. I was wondering if you've had any success pairing the controller (via bluetooth) with any other platforms (Xbox, PS4, AppleTV, etc). The EZ-Key is discontinued and I'm planning to test my Adafruit Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE... I'm hoping I can create a game pad with a joystick that my 3 year old can use to play games on our Apple TV.

I'm glad you found my write up helpful! At the time of the project build I was able to successfully pair with a Windows PC, and my iPhone. For whatever reason, the Pi 3B+ I was using didn't seem compatible with that version of bluetooth. My feeling was that troubleshooting the bluetooth pairing is mostly not exposed to people like us. We can request pairing via a software trigger, but the actual compatibility is handled by firmware buried in the bluetooth chipsets of the two devices. In other words, if the devices don't have compatible bluetooth, then there's nothing we can do about it. My suggestion would be to get your Adafruit Feather on s breadboard and get it to emulate a joystick and see if it will pair to your Apple TV. If it doesn't, then don't proceed with the hardware build until you find a combination of bluetooth devices that will pair. It may be obvious to you already, but part of my build relied on emulating a keyboard (not a joystick), and the RetroPie software allowed me to remap those key presses to any function. If you follow that model, be sure the Apple TV will take game pad controls from a connected keyboard. Apologies if you've considered that already. Good luck!

@rkhamilton whoa thanks for replying! Since my comment I have successfully paired the Bluefruit as an HID Keyboard and sent commands to my AppleTV! Having confirmed that, I just ordered arcade joystick and buttons from SparkFun. Have you ever used the Qwiic Switches they make? Hoping it makes the debounce latency as optimal as possible since it is geared toward arcade buttons and joysticks. Maybe that is just some simple math in the library, I don’t know but hopefully it was worth the cost. Excited to get this working for my daughter!

Not to belabor the point, but my concern about the apple TV was that I don't know if you can use a bluetooth keyboard as a joystick in whatever software you are interested in running on the Apple TV. The fact that you can pair with it as a keyboard is great, but does your Apple TV game recognize keyboard input like arrow keys and stuff? It may! But that's what I would worry about prototyping. I haven't used any arcade hardware other that the products I listed in this project build. If you're already familiar with debouncing switches I apologize for elaborating here: Software debounce is no big deal. If you look in my main header file you'll see that I'm debouncing using a nifty button library written by Alexander Brevig. https://github.com/rkhamilton/ArcadeControlPanel/blob/master/ArcadeControlPanel/HIDRawArcadeControlPanel.h It was in my arduino libraries folder so not under version control in this project. I found that 15ms delay was enough to eliminate any double-signals. The button class I'm using appears to be this one: https://github.com/tigoe/Button I couldn't find where the original author has that same code on github anymore. Good luck with the project!
