Zero-padding

Zero padding is easy if you just think ahead and make space, but is it possible (not actually sure it is; haven't delved into fft algorithms) to zero-pad without actually physically zero padding?

I've thought about this problem a lot, and have no good answer. If you figure something out, I would love to know about it!

Good to know! I've only ever treated the FFT as a black box, so I have no ideas here except maybe to google how other people have done it!
